Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida has been moved from UFC 173 to UFC 175 due to a knee injury sustained by Weidman during training.
The UFC announced that the current middleweight champion will require minor surgery on the injured knee forcing him out of the main event at UFC 173. A new headlining fight will be announced in the coming days.
Weidman was originally slated to defend his title against Vitor Belfort. However, Belfort chose to withdraw from the fight to allow time for his body to adjust following the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s high-profile TRT ban.
Former light-heavyweight champion Machida stepped in to fill the vacancy left by his Brazilian counterpart and will look to continue his winning ways at middleweight.
“Machida is a dangerous fighter and he knows what it takes to become champion,” said Weidman said in a statement shortly after the fight announcement.
“He’s been on my radar since he dropped to 185, so I’m looking forward to defending my title against him in May.”
