Thais down under: Nuengpichit Sityodtong

Nuengpichit Sityodtong won the World Muay Thau Council Championship as a 21-year-old. He is now in Australia training fighters.

Please tell us a bit of history about yourself.

I learnt Muay Thai from my father and started fighting when I was 11 years old, I was 20 when I won the Lumpinee championship in 1995, and I won World Muay Thai council (WMC) when I was 21 years old in 1996.

How old is the ENRG gym? What motivated you to join them?

The gym has been here for three years. I became friends with the owner (Ruby Beiruti) and decided I wanted to join to make Muay Thai champions for the gym.

Can you mention one thing that happened that you were not expecting when you changed over to teaching?

When I went from fighting to teaching I found I enjoyed it too and more exciting because after achieving all the goals I wanted, I realised I wanted to help others achieve theirs.

Can you name some of the famous fighters you already battled in the past?

I had fought with Chainoi Muengsurin, Kwannah TorBoonlert, Parnpetch Muengsurin, Sankeng Sor Weerakul, Neungsiam Fairtex, Netnarin Fairtex, Robert Fairtex, Changnoi Sor.Vanich, Kaolan Kaovichit, Namsaknoi Yuttakarnkamtorn, Kaoponglek Looksurathum, Sanchai Keitsupattra, Sittichai Petchbangprang, Sankom Sakpanu, Sanchai Jirakrengkrai, and more...

Who are some of the more active fighters at your stable?

Jake McVean (Monpichit Enrg Muay Thai), Kenneth Oo, Max McVean .

What do you think has to happen to help the sport progress?

I think it would help if the training system or the fighting system was more like the traditional Thai, and even for those who just want to train for fitness, the basics are still very important same as techniques, In other words if you want to fight you will be fine because you will know & understand proper techniques.

Do you think you have one more fight left in you?

No, I don't think about fighting anymore, I have had enough fights (I'm so full!).

Where can we see your gym’s fighters in action? Any upcoming shows they are preparing for?

We had a fight last week in Brunswick and have a few more fight coming up but nothing is confirmed yet.
